Russian Propaganda posters

Here are some layout designs following Russian propaganda poster designs for the pre-production project "Cook-a-doodle-do" for different episodes. I think I could improve the perspective to create some stronger, powerful posters and also add colour and texture to match the art style.

Rough work

I also modelled a really rough city as a 3D environment that could be developed if needed.

Test shot

Golden gate bridge

For our live brief we have chosen one of our settings to be in San Francisco. I modelled the golden gate bridge as a test to see how we could create our environment.

I was able to create this thanks to Mike Hermes youtube tutorial.

Cook-a-doodle-doo!

Another pre-production project I've been working on is cook-a-doodle-doo. The cards for Jade's project were:
Character – Birds
Setting – Municipal baths
Style - Russian Propaganda posters
Show – cooking show

I found this style of art easier to draw in than art nouveau and came up with a few character designs. I have also written some ideas for other episodes.

Preston Blair

Some copies of Preston Blair sketches I drew a while ago. I found these really helpful to understand proportions and how to draw simple shapes as well as creating an interesting pose using lines of action.

Elipses

While drawing the fountain, I didn't realise the ellipses were the wrong shape but had a go at correcting them. I think a bit more practise drawing on photoshop would help me improve drawings and paintings.

Ahhh CGI

Sometimes the computer makes mistakes. It's not our fault.

This little clip makes me feel so much better about when Maya glitches and makes my animation go crazy and my characters do crazy things and I feel like quitting because I can't solve the problem.

This film was a huge success and gives me hope that one day I'll be able to solve problems in CGI and laugh at the weird malfunctions!

Pie

A story about the life of pies below a fish and chip shop is a group project I have decided to work on for one of my modules. I have been set concept art and design for the world of Pickleton, beginning with a fountain for the garden. The style of this project is in art nouveau, the characters are pies, the setting is a fish and chip shop and the type of film is about news. These were the cards my coursemate was given to base his project on and his pitch made it through to the finals - I enjoyed the pitch and decided I would like to work on Luke's film Pie.

Life drawing

In this session we started with a long warm up pose and then had shorter poses that were a couple of minutes long which moved onto even shorter poses that were about 30 seconds to capture the movement and line of action with the figure. We then applied this quick sketch out method with out longer poses (5 and 10 minutes) which I feel helped to create a better drawing as the planning of the figure and position allowed us to spend more time on detail later.

The last two drawings were longer so we could put our new methods to use. I found the second position very dramatic/difficult but I can see how I would improve it in future. I was quite pleased with the outcome of the first drawing, although the head is slightly high up and larger than it should have been.

Summer walks

Over summer I worked on a walk to practise using maya and Joe Daniels rigs. I used Tina as I was having a go at creating a very sassy strut.

To improve this walk I think I would add just a bit more movement in the upper torso and maybe slightly more swaying hands. As this was a looped walk I didn't add any extra movements or offset the hands very much and left it as a kind of cat walk.

Life drawing - heads in boxes

We tried a new method of drawing faces and heads last week, after drawing a few quick 10 minutes sketches of each others heads we had a go at drawing cubes and adding heads inside to see how the structure of the head would be drawn if the head was positioned at different angles. Whilst attempting this task we also had a go at trying to grasp the essence of different course mates.

We also drew each other as we worked (left) which was a fun task. Another interesting task was to draw with our non-dominant hand (right) which was difficult, but I was surprisingly pleased with how it turned out as I'm not ambidextrous.

Progress of 11 second club

We had a feedback meeting on our progress which was very helpful as I received a lot of great advice on how to improve my action. There are a lot of changes and improvements I can make to this animation such as camera angles, offsetting movements, more enthusiastic movements and some subtle movements. I also need to add lip-sync.

Faces and heads - life drawing

First drawing of the session to see how well we could draw the shape of a head.

Practising drawing the structure of the skull and the head without detail.

We also had a go at drawing the skull and face using a square, and geometric shapes.

Final drawing at the end of the session.
