Deep

A storyboard task from a while back which I forgot to upload. I made the mistake of changing the sides the characters were on in 9 and 12. I need to remember to draw the shot from the opposite side if the characters move.

Stop motion walk

I think this walk could be improved as I seem to have made the legs kick backwards as the doll moves forward. The hips were a little stiff on this doll, so next time I should loosen them so I can bring the leg forwards as I animate the step rather than kicking the leg backwards from the knee.

Smoke - again!

I realised that the last "smoke" I posted had smoke that matched the background. I didn't realise that changing the colour in the colour palette changed for everything else in that colour on ToonBoom. I have fixed this and here is my smoke on a white background!

Weekly drawing projects

Week 1
Toy Story

"Find, borrow or buy a toy. Draw the toy all week in different locations. Give your toy a week of adventures."

For this first weekly project I took a slightly different approach than what the brief suggested. I bought a teddy and created a character using it's appearance as a basis to work from. I then created a short story based on what I sensed from the bear.

Week 2
Tangerine Dream

"Find a piece of fruit. Draw it, taking care to look at the form. Not make or draw an animation character based on the form of that piece of fruit. (S/he doesn't have to be a fruity character, just use the shape as a starting point)."

I worked with a few different pieces of fruit for this to find the best one to work with. I enjoyed this week as I find it helpful to draw realistically and transform my drawings into a more stylistic drawing or character.

Week 3

From the real to the surreal

"Take an everyday object, a chair, a bus or a living thing such as a plant. Give it a twist of the surreal, make it look very odd indeed. (Discover the warped side of yourself). Do this at least one a day. "

I was disappointed at the end of this week as I didn't feel my drawings were "warped" enough. I thought I could improve on this so I have attempted this brief again in later weeks.

Week 4

Object of the day

"Choose an object from the list: tree or bush, car, electrical fittings, fabric, hands or feet, food, vessel or container, then add your own object. Each day you must choose a different object. Whenever you go to a new location, you must do a quick sketch of 'object of the day'."

Week 5

From the real to the surreal 2.0

"Take an everyday object, a chair, a bus or a living thing such as a plant. Give it a twist of the surreal, make it look very odd indeed. (Discover the warped side of yourself). Do this at least one a day."

This was my second attempt at this brief. I was happier with this attempt but I still wasn't satisfied and felt I needed to start thinking more laterally and have tried this brief once again later on.

Week 6

Strangers in the day

"Find a stranger. Ask him or her to tell you what to draw that day. Repeat as necessary."

Most of these drawings were drawn in pencil, however I began to draw in biro to increase my confidence and make the drawings bolder.

Week 7

Tangerine Dream

"Find a piece of fruit. Draw it, taking care to look at the form. Not make or draw an animation character based on the form of that piece of fruit. (S/he doesn't have to be a fruity character, just use the shape as a starting point)."

I attempted this brief for a second time to focus on one piece of fruit and create many different characters from that one type of fruit rather than drawing different fruit and creating different characters. I also chose to work in biro for this project as I found it helped me to work quicker and gain confidence.

Week 8

Off the scale

"Using as your inspiration the work of Heinrich Kley (see powerpoint on the Learning Space in DGA160 Storytelling for Animation) and any other relevant artist/illustrators to create concept drawings in which your character(s) are out of scale with their environment.
Reference Gulliver’s Travels in which a giant character towers over a tiny land or A Bug’s Life, where enormous leaves shelter tiny characters."

I really enjoyed this brief as it helped me to explore more with characters in environments.

Week 9

From the real to the surreal

"Take an everyday object, a chair, a bus or a living thing such as a plant. Give it a twist of the surreal, make it look very odd indeed. (Discover the warped side of yourself). Do this at least one a day."

This was my final attempt at this brief and I liked it the most because I used everyday objects and combined them with another object/animal/character depending on how that object looked. I think this worked really well! Practice makes perfect!

Week 10

Acting the goat

"Draw animals from life all week. Have a go at stylising them afterwards. Think of them as though they were actors that you were casting for your latest film. At the end of the week do a character line-up drawing of them all together on the film set."
